I’ve been striving to get my mojo back this past month with homeschooling.
Our time on vacation last month has made staying on schedule a challenge. I tend to be a little driven about staying on task, but who could say no to Mickey Mouse?
Being task oriented probably won’t ever change about me. And yet, every once in a while I hear a little voice within me say, “Whoa, kid! Slow down”.
These last few weeks in our homeschool have been a struggle to check off all the daily boxes. I can feel myself pushing to reach the summer finish line on time. All sorts of little things have cropped up to interfere with our getting a full week’s assignments completed within the week.
I think there is a lesson in these situations for me.
I had to take my son to the doctor yesterday to get a prescription for a lingering cold. That meant two more hours lost of our school week. I could feel some tension seeking to take root.
I had to stop myself from stressing to ask, “What is the need of this hour?”. What small step could I take right then to better our situation?
I took a deep breath, made myself a cuppa tea, and sat with my son to teach him about Lewis and Clark exploring the Louisiana Territory. I resigned to not worry about anything else. We read about two men and their companions undaunted by the wilderness, charting it for what would be the expansion of a nation. And not missing the opportunity to tell my son that it has been said that Clark is one of his ancestors from my Father-in-Law’s side of the family. My Father-in-Law gave each of our kids a set of commemorative coins of this journey years ago before they could appreciate them. We brought them out for a look.
It is important that we don’t miss the education for the sake of task completion. Taking one step at a time, not stressing, and just being faithful has us finally all caught up!
Sweet relief, I tell you!
Let’s see a bit of your week!

This is so great, and so cool that you may have been related to Clark! I too strive with learning and really helping them get the material and just plowing through to the end. We’re only in the middle of chapter 6 for math, but they KNOW the material and that is what I love!

Oh my- yes!! I know what you mean about going through the curriculum & feeling like it’s just for the sake of working through it. I’m happy to hear that you were able to find that moment & make it a good learning experience despite what was happening. The stresses of homeschooling while keeping up on the daily things is a lot to handle. I’m sure most think we just stay home, have all the time in the world & wonder why we don’t get more done. But really- some days school is all that happens. Even tackling school & laundry in the same day can seem like a monumental task- and it is at times. Many don’t understand because they are not doing it- but please know you have my support. I know where you are coming from. Not all days will be good ones- but the important part is that we are giving our kids the best possible thing for them- our time. It’s precious & short lived & that is why it’s so important.

Oh! How I can relate to this post! We have fallen a little behind in our homes school last week and it seems like this week has been a challenge to get back on track. I am reminding myself today, that we will finish this year, and even if we finish a few days past my scheduled time, it’s okay.
Have a beautiful day.

Yes, my son is skipping school sick lately.
I so can understand getting behind when you have a cold…I feel like the piles of stuff never get any smaller☺ Did you get my email on how to do a two vertical photo template?

I would imagine that one of the greatest things about homeschooling is the freedom to get off track when needed; I can also see how that would feel challenging. Sounds like you redeemed a frustrating situation. Well done!
Thank you for the party, have a great weekend

Such a valuable lesson, and one that I struggle with often! It’s one reason we school year round, except for short breaks. I don’t know how I’d get it all done in 9 or 10 months.

oh I think you and I are in similar places right now!

Couldn’t agree more. The journey counts. Sometimes the lessons learned during the process are invaluable.
