Little Things Thursday

If you’ve been around here a Christmas or two you may know that our family has an ornament per year tradition for our children. When my firstborn came along, I bought her an ornament for her first Christmas.  This began the tradition of buying each child an ornament each Christmas.  As they grew old enough to make choices, we let them choose their yearly ornaments.  The idea is that as they grow up and strike out on their own that they would take at least 18-24 ornaments with them for their own trees.  They would also take along their childhood memories with them and stories to tell their families-to-be.

Here is what they chose this year.  I must say that I was a bit remiss this year because we waited too long. We were left with some slim pickins, but I think we came out ok.  We always choose the glass ornaments, because we love the old-fashioned feel of them.

Gracyn’s pick: Chosen for her love of nature and animals.

Aidan’s pick: He loves the traditional ornaments.

Jasper’s pick: For his love of dogs, I suppose.

  2. We started that tradition, but am afraid the ball got dropped awhile back. But we did start another one, It’s called “You are my favorite day” and it’s the day after Christmas, in honor of Pete’s Grandmother who made everyone feel like they were her favorite! 🙂

  5. I love the approach of letting them pick out their own. We too add a new ornament each year and it was with the first born when we were blessed with every kind of ‘baby’s first Christmas’ ornament imaginable that started it all.

These are thoughtful and whimsical … that Jasper … 🙂

  7. I have one of those ornaments that Aidan picked on my tree too! Totally love Gracyn’s choice & I nearly bought one like Jasper’s. I think it is a lovely idea of letting them pick ornaments so that when they set out on their own, they have a start of decorations for their own tree! Lovely tree!

  9. OH, these are MAGICAL!! I just thought, wouldn’t it be wonderful….a children’s book where all the ornaments on the tree come to life at night and frolic aorund the tree!! We gave our kids ornaments every year. Looking back, I wish I had dated them. My girl has hers now, and Jeremy’s are in a box waiting for him to have a home with a tree of his own….sigh! Such a wonderful tradition – you will LOVE having the collection to pass on to them!

  14. We did the ornament tradition, but as kids got older, we slacked off! In the Dec. month is more in what we eat: something with cranberries, eat least one kind of cookie and fudge, and we try to go to the snow at least once in “winter “(since we lived for 3 decades in S. California) – now I live 15 min. away from it:)

  15. That’s a great tradition idea – so great that you’ve been doing it from the very beginning!

  16. you almost have to start selecting new ornaments as far back as Halloween to get the “good” ones! But, I love your kid’s choices, especially the raccoon!

  17. Isn’t it fun to see what each person prefers in ornaments? We have been buying ornaments for our kids since they were born – and now we buy for our grandsons and our children each year. We do an ornament exchange at Thanksgiving so we all have our new ornaments in time for decorating our trees.

  18. I love that you do this, Kim! My husband and I started the same tradition when we were married. Most of our are from Lenox and I like the ornament to be personalized with our name and year, but this year we waited too long too, lol! So we ended up with a Father Christmas ornament from Hallmark. Everything is different for us this year, so he really was the best choice! Blessings on your Christmas!
