Little Things Thursday

Welcome back to Little Things Thursday. It’s officially summer for us here and that means it is time to gather books for summer reading!

I bought three this week.


The first one I’m reading is the life-changing magic of tidying up, the Japanese art of decluttering and organizing by Marie Kondo. This is better known as The KonMari Method.

I’m only a couple chapters in and this probably isn’t the book for the faint of heart, except you probably should still read it if you desire to truly declutter your life. Now, I am not a person who anyone would ever accuse of being messy or keeping clutter. However, I still find myself spending way too much time managing and cleaning things because I live with others. I’ve made peace with the fact that things will need to be constantly cleaned because we use them. That’s fine. What is really eating at me is the incessant managing of stuff. That tells me one thing. We have too much stuff.

Again, by comparison, we don’t have that much. Yet, if I find myself spending a lot of time managing our things, we should have less things to ease that burden. Managing is just not how I want to spend my time. When I really break things down, I want to enjoy living with intention and purpose. I don’t want to be an owner of a lot of things. I don’t want to work hard to buy a bigger house so that we can fill it with even more things. So that I can manage more things. Or better yet, be owned by more things. That just doesn’t fit who I am at my core. But, it is so easy to get caught up in the urgency to have, isn’t it? I mean, we are getting fed that lie of urgency to have the latest and greatest at every turn. And, I’m not even talking about the things we really put to use and find value in. I’m talking incidentals that slowly creep in to our space and take over.

I like nice things, but I don’t really value stuff. I like a nice meal, a nice glass of red wine, or travel to experience a culture. I like nice, but I don’t like accumulating things, unless they truly serve me. I want our things to serve us and bring us joy, not end up being a monkey on our backs. I want the freedom to pursue the truly important things. That’s what this book seeks to help you discover, in part. There is a bit of Japanese philosophy woven in the pages, but there are some core principles that can be applied no matter who you are.

The thing I am enjoying about this book is the way it forces you to strip down to your core values, and when you do, you know where to invest. I like that.

I also appreciate how Kondo challenges every other decluttering tip you’ve ever heard and explains how they just don’t work. It’s fascinating and I totally see the points she is making against those things we have heard our whole lives: one room at a time, one thing in, one thing out, storage, box it up for 6 months, etc… Kondo takes a more comprehensive approach to clutter.

I’ll be sure to share more as I journey further in and apply the principles.

  1. I have that book, too. Bought it last summer. Sitting on the shelf, waiting to be read. That said, during the move (and the move back), I have managed to de-clutter quite a bit. Still a ways to go, but getting there…

  7. I read that book in September. I didn’t follow her full method, but did purge a great deal and now question what I buy and if I really need it.

  8. Ah yes- that book. It certainly helps put things in perspective. I know I’m constantly feeling stifled by stuff. I spend at least one day a week feeling the need to & making the time to purge things. When we shut down the secondary residence, I let go of almost everything we had there. I just couldn’t stand the thought of bringing it back here to store it for another possible chance of needing it. I feel you mama- let it all go & be happy with what you really need.

  9. I’d like to read this book Kim. I’m at a point in my life where I am chomping at the bit to downsize. Little by little as Austin is getting closer to the time of leaving the nest, I am looking around the house and deciding what I can and can’t live without….And even then I’m sure I could do more decluttering. We are not ones to go out and get the latest and greatest fad…for that I’m grateful. I love to purge. That usually happens on summer vacation…which is just a few short weeks away!! xo

    • I’ve always been one to purge my items. What I love about this book is how the purpose is really to decide what to keep. Of course, that means things must be purged, but the emphasis is really positive.

  10. You know I love that book – I’ve read it twice now. And as I mentioned on instagram, the follow up book goes into more detail and is a great follow up. The hardest part for me is keeping the momentum. I get really inspired while reading, start decluttering and then lose interest and motivation because I’m no longer reading the book that inspired me in the first place!

    Also…I’ve fallen in love with her folding methods! Just last night I went to bed feeling quite satisfied that my bedroom and closets were quite tidy.

  11. “We have too much stuff” Oh honey, I am right there with you…and I am in desperate need of taking hold of it. But as you know, a lot of our “stuff” came to us when my mom passed away, and it is so difficult to bring myself to get rid of things…but I am so overwhelmed by all the stuff right now that I am coming close to just tossing it all and leaving the bare minimum. Oh how simple that would make life no? If there were no emotions attached to it all? Big hugs…I’ll be on that de-clutter journey myself…so I know I’m in good company!

  12. I’ve heard of that book but I tend to buy more books than I’ll ever find time to read, so I haven’t bought it yet. I really should read it though because I’ve got far too much stuff including many things I’ve justified buying on the basis that they’ll come in handy for a photo project “one day”.

  13. Am not worrying about stuff – I do and feel better when there’s some clutter:)
    Otherwise I have the feeling I’m a visitor in my own house!
    Hubby has assured me more than once that it’s not cluttered at all (since he used to work in millionaire’s houses all the time when we lived in S. Cal.)
    Also, I only read books about painting and painters -I don’t care to keep up with the Jones’ of readers. Relationships and my passions I live for and I spend all my time and energy on. The rest is to me the bottom of the list.

  15. I feel ya! Last year I sold about 90% of my belongings and left my home. Now that I don’t have a permanent residence I’ve been living pretty minimal. I can’t say that I don’t miss some of the stuff but it’s rare.
    It’s crazy how everything builds up so quickly! I couldn’t believe how much I had accumulated over 11 years of living in LA.

  17. I was given the book for a birthday present, I love it and the idea of only living with things that bring joy. The other day I said I would lend it to a friend, couldn’t find it anywhere… It eventually came to light, buried under a pile of things. I think I am a lost cause!

  18. I’ve been running into this book for a while now… seems to be showing up everywhere… and now here. So Kim, it must be a sign! But the strange thing is even though my family sold and gave away more than half of our belongings when we moved from the States and our current living room looks like we just moved in, I do still feel the heaviness of things. I think your post is just the push for me to finally purchase this little gem of a book 🙂

    • It’s funny because we have done the whole purge and sell everything to move several times. As much as I hated to move frequently, I did love the fresh start and decluttering that came along with moving. We’ve been stationary now for almost 9 years, so in a way I’ve treated this project like an imaginary move. It helps to think in terms of, “if we had to pack up and move today, would I bring this along?” I love the idea in this book of keeping just what is needed and sparks joy. Nothing more, nothing less.
