I’m continuing to explore photographic elements such as geometry, balance, and lines. This weekend I looked for parallel lines around our house to capture.
I found these horizontal parallels on our stairs.
It is important to keep the lines in your images straight to keep your images from looking distracting. This can be tricky. A tip is to use your view finder to line up your horizontal lines parallel to the top or bottom of your view finder.
I also tried to incorporate the geometry and vertical lines of sun and shadows on the wall with side light. This is certainly a first attempt with this kind of lighting. I am usually a high key shooter, but I do want to explore some lower key moody lighting.
I’m really confirming, through some continuing education, how much photography really is art, math, and science rolled into one. I can’t believe how much photography is teaching me to see. The way I see the world is so changed. There is such a huge difference between looking and seeing.
Have you experienced this visual shift in your own journey? What are you seeing through fresh lenses?

I really like this photo – the lines of the stairs make it interesting, and I love the sun shining on the wall, and of course the cute little guy at the top!

I love sunlight and shadows on the wall. Definitely lends a certain ‘mood’ to the photo.
I seem to view the world in ‘frames’ ever since I started taking more pictures.

I’ve always been a fan of lines. Fun shadows in this one, too!

Great tips although I have also found that tipping the camera or even of setting the lines to the centre also can create interesting and quirky images

I completely hear you on this. I wish my viewfinder had a little level bubble that showed when I look though it. I’m always slightly off.

Gorgeous! I am working on the same thing! I actually have the lines in my viewfinder to help me make sure my lines are all straight – it’s made a big difference!

I agree with B-mama; always love shadows in a pic – and lines since they work so well if one use them good, like in this pic.

I completely look at things differently now that I am more involved with my photography. Balance (including the math and science yuck) is a big part of it.
