Last year my husband and good friends gave me a big surprise birthday party at a nice restaurant. It was such a lovely evening, that I’ll remember for years to come.
This year, knowing that we are having a formal event the day after my birthday, I decided to keep my birthday simple.
I’m even doing the lion’s share of the work.
I know that sounds sad, but I really just want to do something nice, and simple…and I didn’t think I could really expect someone else to know what that would look like. I love surprises and pampering…but I’m really not someone who needs a fuss made over them. I much rather surprise others and do something for them.
I found a cake on Pinterest that seemed so “birthday” to me, so I am going to make it! I’m using the non-pariels above to decorate. I love the vintage vibe in the tones. I’ve realized in my “old age” that having a birthday for myself is important to my kids. They feel like it’s a great injustice to not have a cake to share.
I’m planning a meal to make that everyone will enjoy. Some pretty pink and yellow tulips, and sitting by a fire in my pajamas will make for a happy girl! Sweet and simple.

Another Jan birthday celebrant! All the really nice people I know have Jan birthdays (my mom, my hubby, Josh, my aunt,,, and quite a number of very good friends, too!) Have a wonderful one!
I love decorating with nonpareils… they’re so versatile. I still have two more cakes to bake before the end of the month… one for J’s smallparty with friends this Sat and a make-up one for hubby’s birthday (because we were in Korea at the time). Still have not decided what to make yet, but perhaps nothing as adventurous at the chocolate bacon cake this time.

The best birthday parties are the ones that you want…. and often those are often the very simple things!

Well I have to disagree…it makes me sad you are doing your own birthday cake. But I totally understand why. I wouldn’t want to celebrate two days in a row either. Happy Birthday!! Your image is lovely…I would have a hard time not eating them all before I could use them☺

I rather like in my probably “much older than you ” self (wink) the simple celebration, however having said that my last birthday, the big 5-OH, I was expecting a little somethin’…it was just a little too simple! haha
I can’t remember how old your daughter is, but mine loves to make me cakes! This last one was a two tiered cake, each layer had layers, chocolate cake, with a homemade chocolate buttercream frosting and vanilla on the outside with tons of pink swirly flowers…IT. WAS. AMAZING!! I can’t wait to see what your cake looks like…when IS the big day?
